The Quintessential Question: Half Full or Half Empty?

Last week, we shared some interpretations of deep Gratitude, and the joy that emanates.

On the opposite side of the coinage, being grateful should not mean that Life is without Adversity and Trials.  Yet, how we perceive things can determine our predisposition to happiness and/or purpose.

Below are some Quotes and Perspectives about Gratitude and Positivity, albeit a “Half Full” slant to kick off the discussion.

What do you think?

As always, thank you for reading and/or sharing!

Quotes and Perspectives

“Some people grumble that roses have thorns; I am grateful that thorns have roses.”  Alphonse Karr, A Tour Round My Garden.

“Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” Epicurus.

“Free yourself from the complexities and drama of your life. Simplify. Look within. Within ourselves we all have the gifts and talents we need to fulfill the purpose we’ve been blessed with.”

  1. I try to focus on the blessings that each day brings (half-full). At the same time, when I see the suffering that endless wars and inequalities bring here in the USA and across our globe, I fear that the One Percent has enslaved us all (total empty).

  2. I will share a dichotomy on reality, and the effect gratitude and positivity has in a future post. It will probably be useful to clarify the earlier comments. Stay tuned!

  3. “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” – I completely agree with this statement. At times we forget to enjoy what we have and moreover don’t see the positives around us. Yet It is importaint to have desires and strive towards them. So that later on we enjoy them and bask in the achivement of ‘what was once among the things we only hoped for’. Therefore it is importaint to have a balance.

    1. Thank you for your comments, Aradhana! 🙂 Agree! Gratitude for what you have gives baseline contentment (Epicurus), + the motivation to give back, to do your best (Steve Maraboli) “we all have the gifts and talents we need to fulfill the purpose we’ve been blessed with.”

That way, we are either happy or more happy, yes? 🙂
P.S.: Will take the more complex topic of purpose at a future date.

    1. Thanks for your insight, Patrick! 🙂 Agree that most here should see more than half full (in fact have full CUPS). The updated debate is in the post “Defining the Proverbial Cup”! Have a great week ahead!
